Is air travel safe?

If you flew last year, you were part of roughly 40 million commercial flights that criss-crossed the globe. So, how safe was that sky highway? In short: still exceptionally safe by any historical measure, even as traffic has surged back to (and beyond) pre-pandemic levels. The latest safety data shows tiny accident rates, rigorous certification standards, and increasingly predictive tech that prevents problems before they happen.

The numbers: risk per flight is microscopic

According to the 2024 IATA Safety Report, the global “all-accident” rate in 2024 was 1.13 per million flights (≈ one accident per 880,000 flights). That’s slightly above 2023 (1.09) but better than the 5-year average (1.25). There were 7 fatal accidents across ~40.6 million flights. Context matters: 2023 was a record-safe outlier.

What that means for a traveler: at these safety levels, IATA’s fatality-risk metric implies you’d have to fly every day for many millennia to expect involvement in a fatal accident, an illustration of just how rare catastrophic outcomes are in modern commercial aviation. 

Safety in layers: redundancy by design

Every modern airliner is designed around one simple rule: no single problem should ever bring the airplane down. 

In the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) lays out this principle in Advisory Circular 25.1309-1B (updated 2024), which guides how manufacturers must analyze and limit system-failure risks. In Europe, the same logic appears in EASA’s Certification Specifications for Large Aeroplanes (CS-25).

Both agencies specify that the most serious types of failures, those that could lead to a crash, must be “extremely improbable.”

To meet that standard, aircraft are built with layers of redundancy:

  • Multiple power sources, so if one electrical generator fails, another instantly takes over.
  • Triple-redundant flight-control computers, each cross-checking the others for errors.
  • Independent hydraulic systems and wiring routes, so physical damage to one area can’t disable all controls.
  • Backup cockpit instruments with their own power supplies.

This “fail-safe” design philosophy requires engineers to assume that failures will happen and prove the airplane can continue safe flight and landing regardless, making modern commercial aircraft among the most resilient machines ever built.

From schedule-based to predictive: maintenance gets smarter

The last decade’s quiet revolution isn’t just in hardware; it’s in data. Airlines, OEMs, and engine makers stream sensor data from fleets and use analytics to predict issues before they become events:

  • Airbus Skywise now connects 11,900+ aircraft, giving operators predictive insights that reduce unscheduled maintenance and keep fleets available, which is a direct safety and reliability boost.
  • Rolls-Royce aggregates engine telemetry across every flight via Engine Health Monitoring to spot anomalies early and schedule the right shop visits, minimizing in-flight shutdowns and surprise failures. 

Bottom line: when you convert unplanned problems into planned maintenance, you reduce operational surprises, a key ingredient in today’s low incident rates.

The human-tech partnership

Two more layers keep risk low:

  • Training & procedures: standard calls, checklists, upset recovery training, and crew resource management mean two pilots cross-check each other and the automation.
  • Data sharing & oversight: global bodies (IATA, ICAO, EASA, FAA) share incident data and issue directives fast. In Europe’s 2025 review, for example, commercial air transport recorded 3 fatal accidents in Europe amid 7.7 million flights, while the worldwide totals underscore why trend analysis, not headlines, should shape perception. 

Why you sometimes see scary headlines (and how to read them)

Aviation incidents tend to cluster in time and media coverage. A year with a few late-year events can look “bad” versus a record-safe prior year, even if the multi-year trend is stable or improving. That’s precisely what Flight Global analysts flagged for 2024 vs. 2023: rare events can skew simple year-over-year comparisons. Always look at rates (per million flights) and multi-year trends, not just raw counts.

So… how safe is flying?

Measured by accident rate per flight, fatality risk, and regulatory assurance, modern air travel remains one of the safest things you do. The system keeps tightening: redundant architectures & fail-safe design, predictive maintenance, and stringent certification together make catastrophic outcomes extraordinarily rare, even as global traffic sets new records.
